Trio has returned, folks! Yes, the much loved biscuit bar is back due to popular demand and mainly thanks to a whizzy Facebook Campaign. It may have only been 13 years but I can't say I actually remember said Toffee treat despite eating a hell of a lot of biscuits in my youth.. It's a good job they are back now for me to give a whirl, even if it is only for a limited time!
I picked up the packet of 6 from Asda where they are priced at £1 - You can't beat such a bargain! Each bar weighs in at a fairly dinky 23g which after some research, seems to be the going grammage of biscuit bars nowadays.. Who knew?
Oo it's like a red Club with premium gold foil.. Were they always packaged this way or could it have been plastic back in the day? Someone help me out - They are still not ringing any bells!
Milk chocolate coated crunchy biscuit with a toffee flavour cream.
And right there is the very reason why they are called a Trio.. 3, easy to break, cubes of biscuity goodness smothered in chocolate.
I was quite excited to get stuck into this well loved and anticipated bar so took a brief sniff before munching - It smelt a bit like coffee to me! A extremely light, airy yet crunchy biscuit was the first thing to hit me with a sort of caramel/coconutty concoction of a taste.. Even though the latter isn't in the ingredients! The chocolate coating was thick enough and fairly generically sweet but the mild cocoa went well with the biscuity flavour as expected as well as blended into the soft toffee layer. Thankfully, all this did strike a familiarity that took me back to when I was a Kiddo - Great texture, great flavour and greatly moreish!
Well, despite being clueless about the Trio and what all the hoo-ha was about, I can now see why they were so popular back in the day.. Heck, I am now almost positive that I did have them in my lunch box at some point. They taste like an old school biscuit bar which I feel is something we have lost a bit.. Perhaps this is only due to the fact the likes of the Penguin or Breakaway have never gone walk about but I do truly hope these LE offerings from McVitie's stay firmly put on our shelves.. They're addictive! It's a 4 out of 5 from me!
Can't wait to find these - I really want to try them to see what the hype was about as I never tried them back in the day either
ReplyDeleteAh fingers crossed you stumble across them soon! You might surprise yourself like I did and realise you have had them previously after all - There is nothing quite like a biscuit to evoke a memory :D xx
DeleteLocal asda failed me, I am most upset!
ReplyDeleteAs did mine last week and I too was most upset! Hopefully next week they will find their way to your store :D xx
DeleteI used to love these! Will have to hunt them down!
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you still think they taste the same when you do find them! xx
DeleteEeeeek I must confess I'd forgotten they existed but they were a staple in my lunchbox when I was about 6. I'm sure they used to include stickers that my brother and I stuck on the freezer!
ReplyDelete:O Don't tell me that.. I love a good sticker! xx
DeleteLet's just say my family called me the Trio Girl...(yup, I had the redhead, vocal cords and Trio addiction all down pat). Heard about the return and been hunting since. I WANT A TRIO AND I WANT ONE NOW.

ReplyDeleteNot sure if I ate one, but remember the advert ☺ I would be over the moon if Mars, UK would re-issue Banjo bar last seen over 30 years ago
ReplyDeleteNo way! You'd be thrilled if they re-issued the Banjo Bar!? :O This is shocking news! Haha. Hopefully they will one day for you! :D xx
DeleteI shall go to Tesco, come home and eat the pack of 6 in one sitting.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a plan to me! xx
DeleteJust eating one now. They tastes as good as they did back in the 80's. Only 4 biscuits in the pack I bought which is not enough imo. I loved these as a kid and does anyone remember the united biscuit? They were in a blue and white wrapper and the commercial was about football with a whistle. 9 would love them to make a return.
ReplyDeleteAh I am so pleased you think they are as great as I did :D Where did you buy them? I thought 6 was a little tight, let alone 4! I've had a google and can't say they look familiar (Although neither did these until I tasted one!) but maybes they will make a comeback to if the demand is there for old school biscuits. Heres to hoping! :) xx
