Snackmas Day 15- Betty Bakes Christmas Bonanza!

Betty Bakes has put on her Christmas chefs hat and come up with some delightful Festive Cakes - All of which are Gluten Free of course! We can't have anyone with intolerances missing out and although I don't suffer myself, I was very kindly sent the range to give a whirl especially for Snackmas!

T-B Orange & Ginger Tiffin, All-Butter Shortbread, Christmas Meringue, Cinnamon Shortbread, Midnight Mint, Crimbo Crumble, Christmas Pudding and Christmas Snowball

Now, if I had been smart I would've weighed each bar prior to scoffing so am going to have to assume that each was around 70g with the Pudding and Snowball obviously being a lot lighter given their puffed rice composition - If anyone is even interested in said numerical happenings!

Orange & Ginger Tiffin

Nothing is more Christmassy than Clementines and all things Orange which makes this bar a pretty spiffing place to start! It smelt super citrus and real rather than artificial extract - I personally feel the stuff should be banned as its good to no one so am pleased to see peel was used here! I took a bite through the crunchy biscuit set within dark chocolate and was greeted with the most amazing taste combo of cocoa and strong Orange with undertones of what tasted like a Gingernut with its signature mild heat in the background. Each flavour was significant on its own as well as pairing perfectly with one another producing something which I would say was near perfection! A 4.5 out of 5 from me.

All-Butter Shortbread

Another Christmas classic - Shortbread. It smelt and tasted as its name suggested.. Buttery! Texture wise, things were far softer than I envisaged. The bite to the bar wasn't crisp nor did it crumble which produced a almost chewy feel that I would liken to a very dense brownie rather than a biscuit.. Although it was still very pleasant! The sprinkle of sugar on top was a lovely finishing sweetness to what was well done but essentially, quite a plain treat. A 3.5 out of 5 from me.

Christmas Meringue

Given that it was so packed with almonds and meringue pieces, this bar was a bit of a nightmare to cut and it did disintegrate in places - I did try my best to patch the bits back together for the good of a decent picture but it wasn't easy, believe you me! Popping some of this crumble into my mouth, I was surprised to discover it was full on dark chocolate and strong Bakewell which was a flavour sensation! The light, airy and dissolving meringue pieces added a sweetness as well as contrasting in texture to the abundance of crunchy almonds and squidgy sultanas, making for a spectacular mishmash of a mouthful. Another 4.5 out of 5!

Cinnamon Shortbread

Why have normal All-Butter Shortbread when you can add some festive warmth to your life in the form of cinnamon?! I see no reason to be plain and this was not the sole difference either.. The texture was far firmer with a crispness to the outside before the familiar melting interior that wasn't "cakey" and transitioning from buttery to the spicy kick of cinnamon with the sweet sprinkling of grainy sugar - Yum! A 4 out of 5!

Midnight Mint

After Eight in bar form? Surely not? I am happy to announce, oh yes! A soft base of what I assume was chocolate shortbread was the first layer of cocoa goodness before hitting a sugary sweet mint fondant that was most certainly potent and uncanny to its confectionary friend! The dark chocolate was the ideal pairing to mellow the mint slightly but I would say this is one to have with a strong coffee otherwise things might get a bit to much given the richness! Its 3.5 out of 5 from me.

Crimbo Crumble

Well would you look at that.. It's Mince Pie but in a bar - It wouldn't be Christmas without such a thing! The scent was uncanny to your jarred mincemeat which I could smell all day.. As well as eat of course! The base and crumble topping was fairly soft but did not crack as some of the other offerings had. It has a melt in the mouth feel once beyond the initial chewiness, with crunchy almonds for a harder feel and nutty edge. The same buttery taste of the Shortbread was apparent but boosted by a thick medley of tangy citrus, brandy and dried fruit which certainly tickled the tastebuds! A 4 out of 5.

Christmas Pudding & Christmas Snowball

Last but by no means least were the Christmas Balls.. Check out that clean cut of the knife - Impressive, right?! I have to admit.. These were the ones I was most looking forward to since Rice Krispie cakes were pretty much my life as child.. And I suspect they were yours too! These bad boys were densely packed with puffed rice to ensure for a firm, satisfyingly crunchy mouthful. The toffee used to hold the lot together was super sticky and sweet with the white chocolate of the Snowball adding further sweetness and tones of tropical coconut - Always a good pairing! I wasn't such a fan of the Christmas Pudding as the plain chocolate itself just didn't meet my expectations in terms of quality but overall did have a slight salty kick which went a long way given all the sweet elements. A 4 and a 3 respectively.

Well, that was well worth the potential diabetic future I face upon crashing from the sugar rush that's currently having me, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree! This Christmas Collection from Betty Bakes is marvellous! Did anyone notice how I failed to mention the lack of gluten throughout the post? There is little need as you really wouldn't know they didn't contain 'normal' ingredients. They are baubles above any Free From equivalent you might find in the supermarkets and can/should be enjoyed by everyone, no matter the circumstances. Thanks Betty for spoiling me and more importantly, those who need you the most - You little cracker!

Review- Betty Bakes Very Berry Flapjack Bites

Betty Bakes has returned to the Bloggy! This has been a long time coming - Our week long Bonanza was way back in May, would you believe it!? The reason it has been so long is due to the fact Betty isn't stocked anywhere near me much to my dismay. Fortunately, I randomly spotted this bag of Very Berry Flapjack Bites at Snape Maltings in Suffolk - My home away from home! Now, the price I am a little shady on.. I am pretty sure I bought mine on sale for £2.75 (ish) but their normal price was £3.50 - Pricey, yes!

All butter flapjack with raspberry sauce and real cranberries drizzled with white chocolate

The 16 bites really were bite size and smelt beautifully fruity - A scent no one can resist! Texture wise, the flapjack base was quite dry and very crumbly yet chewy at the same time.. It was a good job they were designed to be eaten in one go otherwise crumbs would have been everywhere! Packed with oats, a nutty butteriness was the initial flavour developing into a tart cranberry and raspberry which was cut by the sweeter topping of creamy white chocolate. The different elements went perfectly together and it was all to easy to pop one after another of the sticky cubes into your mouth!

Well I am as pleased as ever with old Betty Bakes - She really is the queen of gluten/wheat free! These Very Berry Flapjacks are definitely one to try if you're sensitive to such things and even if you're not.. They are a hell of a lot tastier than similar products. Hunt them down and give them a go. Its a 4 out of 5 from me!

Betty Bakes Bonanza Round-up!

Hello Snack Army!

Sadly, all good things must come to an end.. 6 Days, 6 Bars, 6 reviews, have all been complete. Our Betty Bakes Bonanza is over.

Betty Bakes Round-up
As a whole, I have loved every single bar I have had his week. Apart from the odd thing, I couldn't find much fault in any of them - I found them very difficult to mark out of 5 given the high standard!

I cannot commend Betty Bakes enough for creating such amazing wheat & gluten-free bars. It is not fair for anyone with an intolerance to miss out, although they are perfect for anyone who just fancies an indulgent treat! You would never know the difference between Bettys Bars and those that are not free-from apart from hers being far superior!

My personal favourites were the OMG Bar, Lemon Meringue & White Chocolate and Raspberry & Coconut.. But who am I trying to kid? The Billionare Bar and Toffee Tiffin were delicious too! Although I would have it again in a heartbeat, I would be more drawn to the Bakewell Bar if it had more of an almond flavour - I am an almond fiend!

I am keen to try more from Betty Bakes and already have my eye on the Eton Mess, Toffee Crisp and Banoffee Bar!

Stockists
Betty Bakes is sold in IKEA, Selfridges, Debenhams, Waterstones, Jamie's Italian, Wyevale Garden Centres as well Cafes and Childrens Play Centres.

Betty Bakes Bonanza Day 6 - OMG Bar

I have to confess.. Whenever I make flapjacks, it is not often that they make it into the oven. I love oats so much that I always end up eating the mixture straight from the saucepan that the ingredients have been melted together in!

Our final review from Betty Bakes comes in the form of the OMG Bar.

The 90g bar is made of gluten-free oats as well as oat flour. The flapjack base is topped with pumpkin & sunflower seeds, flaked almonds and cranberries, all sitting upon a sweetened condensed milk, caramel layer.

The oats really were packed into this bar! The flapjack was dense and chewy with a sweet golden syrup, buttery flavour. It tasted very oaty and wholesome - I think the seeds and nuts helped contribute to this also. The almonds added a nutty element to the bar whilst the crammed, pumpkin & sunflower seeds added a lot of crunch. A pop of tartness from the ruby red cranberries prevented the bar from becoming overly sweet even with the soft and sticky yet delicious, caramel layer. Absolutely divine!

Overall, this is another fantastic bar from Betty Bakes.. Surprise, surprise. I loved it so much I didn't even share it, as I had done previously! I would go as far as to say, it's the best bought flapjack I have ever had. It's a 'OMG' worthy, 5 out 5 from me!

I will be back later on with a Betty Bakes Bonanza Round-up!

Betty Bakes Bonanza Day 5 - Lemon Meringue & White Chocolate

I have made 2 lemon meringue pies this week and given both away. It is only fair that I am rewarded with the same flavours but in bar form!

The penultimate review of our Betty Bakes Bonanza is Lemon Meringue & White Chocolate.

The 90g, free from nasty flavourings and colourings bar, consisted of lemon curd upon a shortbread base, topped with a Belgian white chocolate and meringue layer.

The first thing to jump out at me was the bright yellow curd - it was practically a sticky neon goo! It had a tangy lemon flavour whilst still being sweet enough to banish any tartness. The base was once again a little crumbly but had a lovely light buttery taste with no salty kick! The Belgian white chocolate on top with meringue pieces running throughout, was amazing - sweet but not throat burningly so with a slight crunch before the meringue melts in your mouth.

All I can say is, perfection! It's a fab option if you are looking for something a little lighter - it is a bit to easy to eat all in one go though! It's full marks for Betty today - 5 out of 5!

It's the last day of the Bonanza tomorrow.. The OMG Bar is our Grand Finale!

Betty Bakes Bonanza Day 4 - Billionaire Bar

Why have Millionaires Shortbread when you can have Billionaires? Sometimes you just need chocolate and lots of it!

Betty knows what's good for us! Here's review number 4 of the week.

This 80g bar is a case of 'GO BIG OR GO HOME' with 3 types of Belgian chocolate- white, milk and plain with caramel, on a dark chocolate base made of Betty's signature gluten-free oat flour and cocoa.

I was a little disappointed by how the bar cut. Although it tasted pleasant, the base was quite dry and very crumbly - not sure if the cocoa was to blame! The buttery caramel layer was soft, sweet, sticky and utterly delicious. A thick chocolate topping completed this bar. It certainly tasted like a premium chocolate with a deep rich flavour and fantastic melt. I really enjoyed the 2 white chocolate buttons on top - it added another element of sweetness. I was quite surprised to find that this bar had no salty taste to it unlike some of the others I have reviewed this week. No qualms either way though!

Once again, Betty Bakes has produced another cracker. I'm never going to want regular Millionaire Shortbread again. It's a 3.5 out of 5!

We need some fruit after all this indulgence.. Lemon Meringue & White Chocolate is up tomorrow!

Betty Bakes Bonanza Day 3 - Raspberry & Coconut

I shall spare you all, a spiel about my love of coconut. It's the best thing of life. We all know it.

We are half way through our Betty Bakes Bonanza! The Raspberry & Coconut bar is today's review.

A third, 95g bar - they really are very substantial. More than big enough to share if you are feeling particularly generous!

The bar smelt gorgeously tropical upon opening - just as all good coconut treats should. I was blown away by how densely packed the coconut was! It's thanks to this thick layer that the bar had a seriously chewy consistency. The fruity raspberry jam went perfectly with the sweet potent coconut. Once again I found that the base, although buttery, had a salty kick to it. It really helps balance out all the sweetness!

Overall, given my love of coconut there was no way I wasnt going to adore this bar. Betty Bakes got it pretty much spot on! It's a 4.5 out of 5 from me.

It's another chocolate offering tomorrow with the Billionaire Bar! See you then!

Betty Bakes Bonanza Day 2 - Toffee Tiffin

Tiffin reminds me of my youth! I loved making fridge 'cakes' with my mum as a kid. Chocolate, golden syrup, biscuits and dried fruit.. What more could you ever want?

It is Toffee Tiffin time for today's Betty Bakes review!

The bar weighed 95g once again. It comprised of toffee, gluten free biscuit, sultanas as well as both plain and milk Belgian chocolate.

It cut perfectly to reveal the biscuits inside! It tasted as good as it looked and smelt. The toffee layer was a chewy, sticky delight! It had a lovely sweet buttery flavour which went perfectly with the rich indulgent Belgian chocolates. The sultanas weren't lost in the bar at all - I was surprised at how plump and juicy they were. The biscuits in the base added yet another texture. The crunchy digestives gave a salty kick to the bar which I think helped balance out all the sweet elements.

All in all, I can't find much fault with this Toffee Tiffin - It is 100 times better than anything I made as a child, that's for sure! It's a 4 out of 5 for this delicious 'grown up' version of a classic.

Hold onto your hats.. It's Raspberry & Coconut tomorrow!

Betty Bakes Bonanza Day 1 - Bakewell Bar

Bakewell Tart has always been one of my favourite treats.. Most things are to be fair. I like food, OK.

As promised yesterday, Betty Bakes Bakewell Bar is up first for review.

The hefty 95g bar contained very few ingredients: salted butter, raspberry jam, sugar, free range eggs, almonds, gluten free oat flour. I love how there are no hidden nasties!

This bar was so moist it actually stuck to the outer cardboard! I wasn't overwhelmed with the scent of almond upon opening - it was more like that of a sweet vanilla-y cake. The texture was lovely! It was very soft and squidgy with the almonds on top giving a crunch.Taste wise it was nice and buttery with a subtle hint of almond. The raspberry jam layer added a sweet fruitiness. My only wish is that it contained some almond extract to intensify what was quite a mild flavour.

Overall, I really enjoyed this first offering from Betty Bakes. If the rest of the bars are as yummy as this, we are going to be in got a good week! It's a 3.5 out of 5 from me!

See you tomorrow with Toffee Tiffin!
