Review- Krispy Kreme Cheesecake Doughnuts: Luscious Lemon and Salted Caramel Cheesecake

It is Krispy Kreme time once again! Monday saw the release of the NEW Cheesecake Range so I got myself down to Tesco pronto, to get my mitts on the Luscious Lemon and Salted Caramel Cheesecake Doughnuts.

They certainly look very pretty! I love how Krispy Kreme never scrimp on their toppings.

Luscious Lemon

Hand dipped in cheesecake icing, bursting with a lemon & cheesecake filling, topped with crunchy biscuit and Lemon sugar finished with a tangy lemon drizzle

The dough didn't seem quite as light and fluffy compared to other Krispy Kremes - I am not sure if I just bought a dodgy one or if all the Cheesecake Range doughnuts are like it! The filling in the centre was fairly loose and oozy.. Not that there was much of it to notice! Taste wise, it was pleasant enough but more of a lemon yogurt than cheesecake. It did have a nice tang and wasn't overly sweet though. The lemon sugar topping gave a nice bit of crunch as well as adding an extra lemon-y kick. Its a 3.5 out of 5 from me.

Salted Caramel

Hand dipped in cheesecake icing, filled with Salted caramel and vanilla cheesecake, topped with crunchy biscuit and salted caramel pieces finished with a salted caramel drizzle

The dough tasted buttery and soft but once again was pretty deflated as well as the proportion of filling being a little off. It had a slight tang but wasn't as yogurt-y as the Luscious Lemon. The salt part of the salted caramel was seriously lacking and even then it tasted more like a Werthers Original. The crunchy biscuit was a nice contrast to all the softness but again, nothing to write home about. It is a 3 out of 5 from me.

It turns out I lied the other day when I said that Krispy Kreme always get it spot on - I am both disappointed and indifferent about these Cheesecake Doughnuts. They need more filling as well as actually tasting of what they claim to be - Even the "cheesecake icing" was naff! I also have a feeling Krispy Kreme just bunged the word "Salted" in front of caramel to seem cool and hip.. If it ain't salted, don't say it is! I suggest sticking with a trusty old Strawberries & Kreme or the almighty Lotus Caramelised Biscoff, to satisfy your Krispy Kreme cravings!

Update
After seeing my fellow reviewing buddy @thereviewaddict, raving about these doughnuts, I thought it was only fair that I give them another go. I picked myself up 2 in my local Tesco cabinet and I knew before I had even tasted them, they were going to be much nicer - They felt much more "solid" as well as being heavier.

The donuts texture was that of the usual soft and airy, Krispy Kremes and none of the deflated nonsense, I had before!

Another massive difference was that there was so much more filling inside rather than the measly amount of last time. I have to say that this definitely gave it more of a cheesecake flavour - Not totally spot on but a vast improvement!

My suspicions have proven to be correct.. I must have had 2 dodgy doughnuts, the first time round! I bought them on the day of release so maybe it was first day nerves? Im going to bump them both up to a 4 out of 5 for the dough improvement and generous filling, alone - You still need to sort out your "salted" caramel though, Krispy Kreme.. I'm not letting you off that easily!

Get your skates on if you do want to try these Cheesecake Doughnuts as the Reese Peanut Butter Krispy Kreme is making a return on the 20th, along with some new treats - I can't wait to find out what!

  1. They do look very pretty, shame the flavours and fillings didn't live up to expectations. Great review :)

  3. I tried these when they first came out (first day) and was quite disappointed - I didn't think they tasted very 'cheesecake-esque' at all; maybe I'll have to give them another go!

    1. Oo really? I'm glad I wasn't the only one. They really didn't the first time round but having double+ filling, definitely helped with the flavour! I still wouldn't have called the range "Cheesecake" though, by any means. Get yourself a couple and let me know how you get on! :D
